Exploring the Cottian Alps in the Piemonte region of Italy, just outside of Turin, we are getting ready for a new research expedition.

This file will showcase a 40km segment that climbs to reach the top of Cima Ciantiplagna. The route offers a great combination of smooth gravel that gradually becomes more technical and demanding, making it an ideal test for our Venture Wheelset.

Starting from the small town of Susa, it only takes one kilometer to reach the quiet road that leads to the beginning of everything. The first 10 kilometers are paved with plenty of hairpin turns, presenting a climbing challenge as you ascend in altitude.

From here, the pavement turns to gravel and the remaining 5 kilometers are smooth and scenic. As you approach the final kilometers to the first summit, the valley opens up and offers breathtaking views.

Once you reach the top after the 18-kilometer-long climb at an average of 9.1%, you find yourself at the peak of Colle delle Finestre 2,178 m (7,146 ft), a mountain pass famous for its stunning views and its several features in the Giro de Italia.

As you admire the views over the valley, you quickly realize that you are standing in the shadow of the impressive Cima Ciantiplagna, which towers at 2,849 m (9,347 ft). The plan is to spiral around the mountain and reach its top, making this where the journey will take shape.

Following the route, you descend a few kilometers of Colle delle Finestre until we reach the entry path to the second half of the route. This marks the start of the loop around the majestic Cima Ciantiplagna mountain.

This path will lead to the magnificent Gran Serin peak, providing a mountaineering experience as we traverse the mountainside from one end to the other, covering a distance of almost 10 kilometers.

A challenging yet fulfilling segment, allowing you to fully appreciate the beauty of the Cottian Alps and the natural wonders of the Piemonte region in Italy.

Piemonte is a paradise for gravel biking, with a network of old roads built in the late 1800s for military purposes. Today, these roads are mainly used by hikers or farmers to access their land, making them perfect for off-road riding.

Along the way, you'll come across various forts, barracks, and other historical structures, serving as reminders of the road's rich history.

As you reach the Gran Serin, you are now on the final path to the peak. If you visit in the off-season, there is a high chance of encountering snow on the final sections as you make your way around to the north face of Cima Ciantiplagna.

Be prepared for some hiking.
